Teaching Your Dog to "Drop"
This video takes a look at an alternative way of teaching a "drop" compared to the usual swapping based techniques. I take a more classical conditioning approach and have found it works really well. I would suggest that you do not use this with dogs who are "protective" over their food or other resources but work with a qualified behaviourist / trainer who may use a similar exercise if they see it to be beneficial and/or appropriate in your particular case.

ReplyDeleteDogs do know hundreds of words in any language. But as a kid they must be taught first. All commands, when accomplished, result in a treat at the end, If you were right the dog would not know the difference between down, sit, spin, every thing would main treat. If you teach a kid that the word haddock means chocolate and you use this enough times in front of him, he will be embarrass himself later on school.

ReplyDeleteI really like how you point out and help him find the pieces he missed. It's a great way to reinforce your hands by his food being a good thing.
ReplyDeleteI've been training dogs for over 20 years and this is by far the best "drop" command exercise I've ever seen. I can't wait to use it!

ReplyDeleteHi your dog doesn't know that that he should have things in his mouth, think of his mouth as his hands. I think this video will be ideal for you.

ReplyDeleteI start them off from day 1 and have used it well for adult dogs too. I will teach them both on and off leash.

Been struggling to teach my 9 week old Rottie to understand the concept of 'DROP' as he bites everything & I'm continuosly saying drop and opening his mouth. Then I came across your video, ran to Sainsbury's, got some chicken peices & within 30 mins my pup has got it. Now he is doing it with & without me dropping chicken on the floor, even when he is overly excited the moment I say drop he lets got instantly. Noticed it works with his biting too. You are truly a God send. Thank you so much.

I tried your technique after trying several times to teach my border collie to "leave it" but using other techniques, and yours worked out right away! on the first session!!
