  15. Study operant conditioning. This will give you a good understanding of training behaviour. dog training is simple if you understand how to shape, target and lure behaviours. Try and stay away from compulsion methods when training behaviour. I always like to tell people, complulsion training works with dogs because of their nature, if we were training lions or tigers using compulsion..we would be eaten :)

  16. Time and effort...oh and knowledge of what to do helps. Study operant conditioning, discover how to train a dolphin, even a cat, mouse or cockroach and dog training is easy.

  18. hi pawstive, he was a cross GSD/Rottweiler. Funny thing, no one wanted him when he was donated to us. He nearly failed the initial training course...but he and I went on to win the Australia New Zealand Police Dog Trials, first cadaver dog in Australia and caught stacks of baddies. He was an amazing dog..but I like to think I had a hand in his success since I did train him :)

  19. Hi shootomatic, well...there are a few training courses around, but I don't due to the possible legal implications of teaching dogs how to bite...cos it might come back and bite me in the but :)

  20. Thanks for the kind words. I won't bad mouth any other hanlders, but my approach was always based on useing positive methods to get the dog to do what I want. The dog is more inclined to perform in situations instead of using compulsion methods. Some might disagree..it just do what works for me and I want results in the simplest way possible.

Just watched a NZ police dog training 'demonstration', which was like watching untrained dogs and unskilled, almost violent handlers. Their dogs wouldnt release the sleeve in a leave command. In contrast, these Ozzie dogs and handlers are very professional, more like European schutzhund skill levels.

  23. wow, nice work. Is there a way civilians could do a course like this but more for defence at home or something?
