How to train your dog to relax for nail clipping

Check out this video to see how you can get your dog to relax and be calm during nail clipping. Splash my BC falls asleep most of the time when I clip her nails. This is the safest way to clip your dogs nails without them struggling or snapping at or biting you.

  1. Okay this is great and I have been trying to be as patient as you, but how are you supposed to have your dogs nails clipped so they don't grow out. You said this could take weeks or longer?? My dogs nails all ready way too long.

  3. It sounds like you're rushing ahead to the actual trimming before doing enough ground work first to get her comfortable with the trimming. You also might want to just work on her getting comfortable with having her paws held first, without involving a trimmer.

  4. The pedipaws are pretty much a piece of cheap crap. The Dremel Minimite is much better.

  6. Thanks a lot for your videos!
I have a 10 weeks old samoyed and althought he is a bit stubborn I´ve managed to teach him how to sit, lay down and give the paw using the clicker and your methods.

Now I want to teach him how to stay and to obey me when I call him. Because everytime he sees a person outside he run towards them wacking his tail and some times just sits down and watch. And no matter how much we call him he just stays there.

I´ll shall use this method for grooming.
    Thanks again!

  13. You seem to use a lot of treats, my pup isn't interested in her dry food as treats, and normal dog treats like dried liver gives her the runs if she eats more than the tiniest amount, because she's under 16 weeks, is there any treats you recommend for young puppies?

  14. Just tried to trim my pups nails for the first time tonight; I wish I'd watched this first. Very helpful! And you seem like you really love your pups and that makes me happy :) I will have to try this when I give another attempt at clipping my puppies nails, since we only managed to get half of the front ones tonight.

  17. keep trying, you might not get very far even in the first few sessions, but by the end your dog will be more than happy to let your trim their nails! much better than the forceful method of holding them down and going to town!

btw, clicker training does not make your dog fat, you subtract their treat portion from their meals, I've clicker trained my pup from day one, and she is not fat! yet every other dog I know that is NOT clicker trained is fat! LOL

  18. I slacked on working on this with my puppy when she was little, but now I've been working on it again. Took about 3 sessions for me to be able to touch her feet. and then she was still a little iffy. got one foot trimmed today, but I had to start from scratch with the other one, dogs do not generalize well at all! LOL with a high value treat and a high rate of reinforcement (with some breaks in between) I was able to trim the other foot about 45 min later!! don't give up! take breaks, be patient
