sketchandflash.com Due to many requests, I decided to make a four minute video on how to train your dog to catch a disc using my newest dog, Blitz. PLEASE NOTE I mention to be exciting when getting them driven for the disc. During this video, I AM NOT BEING EXCITING enough for a new dog! Be like a Saturday morning cartoon! Blitz is a herding breed and already has a very high level of drive for discs. Also, teaching the dog to go around you before you throw isn't necessary but I've found it easier for new players. It helps the handler have time to throw especially if they have a fast dog. Plus the dog is more like to catch it if they have to chase it not wait in front of it. Don't get discouraged! It took Flash about a year before he really wanted to play. Although herding breeds are the most common seen playing, ANY DOG CAN DO THIS! Any breed can catch a disc and is welcome to compete! From Boxers to Poodles to Yorkies, I've seen some very different breeds chase Frisbees! Dogs of all ages can play, too. Dogs younger than 1 and 1/2 year should stay low to the ground and should not be doing a lot of jumping because their bones & plates are still growing. Talk to your vet for more details. If your dog is older(8 yrs+? depends on the breed), then ask your vet if they are in a good enough physical condition to be doing this. What is the verbal cue when you pivot? Do you just say 'heel' the whole time?

ReplyDeleteTHANK YOU!! There are lots of videos showing dogs DOING perch work, but yours is the first one I have seen showing how to TEACH perch work! Very clear. Of course as soon as you started, I could see the way to do it, why didn't I get it before? I have always been a +motivational trainer, but have just switched over to clicker. Magic!! I have Weimaraners, an Irish Water Spaniel, Min Pin and Dachshund, so from 40kg (100lb), to about 2 lb. Have subscribed, and look forward to going through them all.

ReplyDeletethe promblem with this video is that some people including me has dog that are giants compare to those dogs, if dogs were smaller it would probaly be harder to train. no hating on ur vidoes or anything because that one with loose leash walk realy worked!!!!! but i dont think a 100pound dog wants to lift his backside that much, but keep making dog training videos!!!!!

@rosebredthoroughbred: where can u buy a clicker? How much did urs cost and what can u use to replace that sound if u can't find a clicker? Are there different volumes too?

ReplyDeletehi, I've been trying this but one of my puppy doesn't seem to want to trurn, they will turn their head but will back away instead of turning. and how to teach my other puppy to do from the front to heel position, she always moves away everytime i try to go close (she is very shy). Any suggestion?

ReplyDeleteHi emily! Wonderful video! But...my dog can move really well but she can't understand when to stop. At 8.15 you turn with Splash in front of you, but when you stop she stops in front of you! My dog doesn't! How can I teach her to stop? Thanks!
ReplyDeleteI wanted to thank you for this video (and all of your others). You've really opened up my eyes to what training can achieve. I used this video to teach my dog how to pivot, and since they she's picked up loads of new behaviours as a result of her increased hind-end awareness. We've begun competing in Rally, too.

My pup learned to pivot facing me very quickly (thank you!), but when I ask her to stand beside me and pivot, she insists on facing me, even though my hand is on my side and I've positioned her in the heel position. I've tried this with her next to a wall, but she's patterned to face me in this exercise. How did you teach your dogs to switch from facing you to being on your side?

ReplyDeleteMy catahoula can catch close. This afternoon, I will try rolling it to get her to run the disc down and will try the "catch" command AS she is ready to catch.
I have a cairn terrier and he can go retrieve the frisbee...but he doesn't bring it back. He just goes and tries to burry it. (natural instinct to dig)

ReplyDeleteMy dog is really good with the frisbee when u roll it on the gound, and she already knows the trick to go around me. but the one thing is when i do small throws she runs so slow! O_O ! but when its in the air she sort of runs like a bunny...... hopping....... i beileve that she will get it overtime!!! :p a couple of times she almost got it!!!!
I just have to say this but i think that u shouldn't use dog treats in this excersise because they become too focused on the food. just a sugestion!

She is very timid, so we are trying to gain her interest whille inside (because outside is just too exciting just yet). Is this a good way to start? ReplyDeleteBorder Collies need tons of exercise and are very mart it can be used against you research a breed before you buy and only buy from a responsible breeder or shelter I got my Australian Shepard Border Collie cross from a shelter I also got my Border Collie there purebred just not wanted someone got him and could not tire him out enough he bugged the day lights outta them perfect with me be careful

ReplyDeleteWhat brand of frisbees are good? I bought these frisbees from the dollar store and my foster dog broke it on the first bite. All the frisbees i see at the pet stores are around 15 dollars just for one. they have the 1 dollar ones but they seem really cheap. Is there a place i can buy a lot of them for a good price and that are durable. I live in chicago or maybe a website

hello im 11 and my pitbull doesn't want to let go of the frisbie he will also break it in 1 minute ( he has chewed golf balls in have ) also sometimes he doesn't want to bring it back. he is going to be 2 in augest

ReplyDeleteI'm trying to teach my Shepherd mix to catch frisbees! She'll let it drop then run around, or she'll slam them onto the ground with her paws! She also won't bring them back, haha. We're working on it!
