How to teach your dog: to fetch drinks from the fridge!

I add a new video every week*** The clips in this video have been selected to highlight the progression in steps for training your dog to fetch drinks from the fridge. I use a 'clicker' to mark the desired behavior, and then reward with food or a toy. It may take up to several weeks to teach the entire behavior chain to a dog. When attempting to do this, it is critical that we remain patient and consistent, in order to set our dogs up for success and help them enjoy learning. I know this is off topic but where did you get that puppy?!?! They arent supposed to away away from their mothers untill 8 weeks! They cant have normal dog food untill around 6 weeks! If you got him/her from a breeder thats a HORRIBLE breeder! Ive seen 4 weeks or 6 weeks before (still bad) but 1 week old! OMG!

We are going to start to work on this, no matter how much my husband protests against our dog knowing how to open the fridge...Yesterday i sat down with my Akita girl and worked on holding and picking up objects after watching your video, she was so much better at piece-by-piece behaviour marking than her usual half-assed fetching...i marked every single time she fetched and treated her for every correct retrieve and she understands it so much better!

ReplyDeleteTab, hi. I am a trainer from the UK, and I'd like to say that your videos are very informative and clear. Perhaps one day I'll do videos too. You explain the clicker well, and it amazes me how so few people use the clicker, and yet they struggle with basic obedience. If they knew the power of clicker and markers their lives would be so much easier. Nice one buddy, keep them coming.

Just wondering if you are 'naming' each of the objects she's retrieving (like ball, bottle etc) or if she is trained using a generic 'get it' command? ps. love your videos, loved the out-take!

ReplyDeleteYour videos and your dog are great; I have a 9 months shepherd male, and I'm amazed at how they look alike; but could you please give me some advice on how to care his coat?, because it's kind of dull and dry, and he has some skin problems but Solea's is just beautiful!!!

Hi I am trying to teach my 14 1/2 year old shepherd husky this. I taught him a couple days ago how to close cabinets and drawers. I have started trying to teach him to open the fridge by having a towel and giving him treats anytime he touches it. He is doing great. I can't use a clicker is is afraid of that sound. I just think I might have a problem getting him to tug. He is not a mouthy dog and has never really tugged on anything. Any ideas?

ReplyDeletei think a good video would be to add two tricks together like opening and closing a door and puting away toys and it would be having her open a low cupboard and taking out something and putting it back into the cupboard.
