How To Clicker Train Your Dog To Enjoy Nail Clipping!

Many dogs dislike getting their nails trimmed. However, we can break down this task into smaller components and recondition a calm response to help the dog learn to tolerate (and even enjoy) this experience. Clicker training allows us to perfectly time and mark the moments that we need in order to build this behavior. Although I am using a clicker in this video, the same results can be achieved by using a consistent marker sound (like the word "yes") in place of the 'click'. Clicker training is very effective in modifying a variety of behaviors in dogs, including but not limited to - aggression.

  1. Probably tiny pieces of meat, which is excellent. We want dogs to get paid with currency *they* enjoy working for.

  6. Thank you so much! My lab was like Solea, and I can now trim him without him being too uncomfortable. Now I have a big puppy that's very scared and I've started to clicker train touching and handling, but haven't introduced the clippers yet.

  9. Thank you so much, this really worked! My puppy thinks the nailclipper is the funniest toy in the world, but when I started to click when he was looking away from the nailclipper he calmed down and offered me the paw! :) Again, thank you!
