Handling Shyness- Clicker Dog Training

Handling Shyness- Clicker Dog Training - training a dog

Handling Shyness- Clicker Dog Training

If you live in the San Diego Area and are interested in adopting Jamie or Beanie, contact: Loving Arms Animal Rescue and Adoption www.lovingpetadoptions.org These exercises are for all dogs, as most dogs do not like to be handled. This video is the first in a series to come... I am sorry about the big block of text at the beginning of the video, but it is because this exercise needs to be taken seriously, as if done wrong you can scare a dog, and a frightened dog will bite, as will any animal that is frightened. If you are worried that your dog is too shy or frightened to work with, you can talk to an animal behaviorist first. Another game you can do is just tossing the dog treats, and feeding the dog his meals by dropping the kibble for the dog following you.

  1. I am working on this with my new puppy who dislikes when strangers lean over him and pet him on the head (he gets scared and sometimes growls or even snips). what is a quick and to the point way to tell strangers who want to pet him what to do? something like "you can pet him, but let him come to you, and pet his body or sides"... I just want something simple to say until we perfect the handling exercises

  2. A key facet to successful counter-conditioning that's left out here is ruling out other predictors of the food. When you do these rapid, rhythmic repetitions, time becomes more of a predictor than touch. The way to avoid that is easy: make irregular ITIs (inter-trial intervals), i.e., space out your touches with variable intervals of time in between.

  3. My friend loves going to the doctor for shots and blood tests because she used to get lollipops whenever she went as a kid.

  4. Can these handling exercises be used and work for harness aversion or do we need to use your 'teach your dog to love his harness' instruction video for that ?

  14. My aunt's dog only stays in the kitchen which is his bedroom. He wouldn't come out. If brought out, the moment he reached home and touches the floor or entered the house, he will immediately run to the kitchen. If there is a guest, he will not come out until my aunt carried him out and hold him in her hands. If she let go, the dog will run back again. But he's supercute you know......

  15. You're making great tutorials! I've found your videos a week ago and already learned a lot about clicker training. I have a one year old Westie and using clicker a lot lately but there are a few things I don't really know... Somehow she is afraid of big dogs and also she is lying down to his back a lot for all dogs... today she did this for a 12 weeks old half sized puppy... Do you know what should I do to build more limit before she bows to other dogs?

  24. Wow- great video! It has helped me a lot.

I must say-I've been working w/ Jackson in a similar way. He's not like super super fearful like I've seen some dogs but he's def. shy w/ strangers (not with ppl he knows at all!) and I've been bringing him to little league games and he's actually begun going up to little kids on his own and i ask the kids if they want to give him a treat. he's gotten significantly better in only a few months! im going to continue on with more advice from this vid.
