DIXIE SQUARE 5th (and Final?) -- 2/28/10 [HD] - dog toys

DIXIE SQUARE 5th (and Final?) -- 2/28/10 [HD]

UPDATE JUNE 2010: No surprises here, the mall is still standing. More than likely the legal situation thanks to John Deneen and friends is halting any demolition progress. ------ Amongst news of a new developer hoping to demolish the mall in March, I took one potentially final trip out to Dixie Square on 2/28/10. The purpose of this one was to get pics of every store in the mall, as I am planning on building a "virtual Dixie Square", so you can tour the mall right from your home! Very interesting trip; no dogs despite a recently-left dog cage, ran into another explorer in Block D, and a nice guy walking down 151st street struck up a conversation with us as we were walking out of Penneys, asking about dogs being in there. As promised awhile ago, I brought back Pink Floyd music for this video. IF the mall is still there in August, I will return. If demo starts anytime soon then I will go and film some of it.

  27. Nice Apartments, Too bad Jake And Elwood Mess it up, If this mall was still open they could have walked from thier home and go shopping at the mall

  28. jake & Elwood "F"ed it up. LOL. The city Harvey "F"ed it up.
The city of Harvey got a ton of money from that movie, and it should have been spent on a tear down.
Vandals, crackheads, homeless, wild dogs have called it home for 30 years.

  29. couldnt tear the place down cuz of the asbestos in there

  30. Hey Jon, How much time do you spend picking out tunes for your Dixie Square Vids??? Really enjoyed the Pink Floyd selection for this video. They must have built this mall out of very inexpensive materials. The water damage that has occurred in only 30 years is incredible! The snow piles through the holes look pretty neat. Awesome job man! Keep em coming:)

  31. Not much has changed since Jake and Elwood fucked up the joint.

  33. How about in Activeworlds, it runs on any computer has a huge people base and you can build for miles and not have to worry about paying for every part like you would have to in SL, Activeworlds, you can freely build and not have to worry about rent, leases and your build would be protected, build it in Alphaworld, activeworlds since that is one of the larger more public worlds, so more people could see it :-), I build realist style constructions in there so does a few other members :-)

This video helped remind me how great "The Division Bell" and this song are. :) What a great choice for this video. I like knowing that there are others who care about old buildings such as this.

  35. Aw, man. This was the mall where the Blues Brothers drove through!

  36. The History channel made a series awhile back called "life without people." This would have been a great place for filming.

  37. A virtual Dixie Square would be a huge undertaking. No dead puns intended. Have you settled on a platform for such a build? Allow me to suggest either Second Life or InWorldz. I have been active on both grids and have found InWorldz to be much more economical but if you want fancier animations or scripted objects like snow, rain, car chases, etc. then Second Life may be the grid for you.

  40. You guys are brave/crazy for doing this-I'de love to see the upstairs section....up the escalators or the metal stairs outside

  41. This mall is pretty much all open now with lots of air getting in, so no need to worry about asbestos; especially with such limited exposure.

  42. This song is the last song on Pink Floyd's last album, The Division Bell.
The final track, #11 is this song, High Hopes.

  43. Over the last few days I have become obsessed with the subject of abandoned/dead shopping malls that now dot all across the United States and Canada. A whole part of the history of post world war 2 North America is being lost, replaced with Wal Mart supercentres and what not. I knew that construction of malls had slowed down back in the 1990s but I didn`t kknow they were being deserted as well.

Where were you standing at 4:25? I'm having a hard time figuring out where you are in your videos in relation to a map on google images/ the blues brothers chase.

  47. @bigjr872 I never said it was a "bad idea", but it's more of the fact that it's another expense, and another thing to lug around. The Asbestos is pretty much OK in this place as long as it's undisturbed, the only places I've found it is on the pipe insulation; the stores are using fiberglass.

    ReplyDelete
  48. Any updates? are they going to bulldoze it yet?

    ReplyDelete
  49. yeah you right. it was just a passing thought.

    ReplyDelete
  50. @bigjr872 Nope. Actually I'm pretty sure it takes years of constant exposure to feel any effects, but I'm not 100%.
