Sheltie Doing Backwards Tricks - dog toys

Sheltie Doing Backwards Tricks

My sheltie Taz has an amazing ability to do things backwards. This is just a sampling of some of his skill. We start with a little warm-up and backwards crawling, and then move into harder and harder tricks. You'll see his "famous" freestyle move of backwards side-steps and even some backwards agility obstacles! In most of these clips, Taz is 13 years "young" (the stairs and Aframe are older clips, I don't ask him to do those anymore!), he isn't quite as nimble as in his younger years but he's hanging in there pretty well! Sadly Taz passed away suddenly just a month after making this video. He seemed so vital and healthy still, it was quite a shock and he is very sorely missed, dogs like him are truly rare treasures. You can visit his tribute page at www.cfwebstore.com or click the links on the right to view more videos of him in action! He was the most amazing, smart, talented dog I have ever owned and trained and he will always have the most special place in my heart.

  24. Well no of course it wasn't a waste of time, I actually had trained most of these tricks years before, but at this point Taz was getting up there in years so to put this video together to audition to be on the show again, we had to kind of go back and re-learn them. I think he enjoyed pulling them back out of the hat!

  25. Even if you hadn't, I would never have said that it was a waste of time. I'm probably preaching to the choir here, but it's not all about the show. Dogs are happiest learning and doing "jobs". I'm sure it pleased Taz just to make you happy with every thing you did together. I'm definitely going to do some trick training work, if no one can ever enjoy it but the two of us (dog and handler). Thank you for being such an inspiration! Taz was a real "Lassie"! :)

  26. Thanks! Yeah I saw your comment on my other video where we did appear on Pet Star, too funny! Actually this routine of backwards tricks was something that we were going to do for our third season on the show, but then it sadly was cancelled. We did though get to do the backwards teeter for the Mike and Kelly morning show, so at least it wasn't all for naught.

  27. OK, Ya'll should be on Pet Star on Animal Planet for that! That's really cool! Going up the stairs backwards? "No dinner until you know the obstacles frontward and..." backwards? That is just unbelievable! Great job!

  45. your dog is amazing, when he goes backwards he stops ands like "here?, no here?" lol haha

  46. wow a have a collie

  47. The same way I teach a teeter going forward, I start with it really low and work up to full height. Of course, he already had learned how to back up in a straight line first! The hardest part is once it tips and he is going downhill....dogs are much better backing up a hill than down it.

  48. Even I couldn't do that, that's so cute though!
