80's Commercials Vol. 159

80's Commercials Vol. 159 - dog toys

80's Commercials Vol. 159

These aired on WTTV in August of 1988. Thanks to Corey for recording these and sending them my way. 1. "Smurfs' Adventures" Commercial Bumper 2. Super Golden Crisp (Sweet Moses...that is one smooooth, laid back bear! And Gangster Bees? Incredible!) 3. Muppet Toothpaste and Toothbrushes (OMG, completely forgot about this. Amazing jingle too. The enthusiasm of the kids is a little scary though LOL) 4. GI JOE Destro's Demon & AGP 5. Burple (What the...?) 6. "Smurfs' Adventures" Commercial Bumper 7. Now You're Cooking (Okay...even I'll admit that this is pretty damn sexist) 8. Roger Rabbit (We had the non-talking version. My dog wasn't nearly as nice to it as the one here) 9. Ertl (I like how each toy gets its own little mini-commercial. Very economical) 10. "Smurfs' Adventures" Commercial Bumper 11. Fruity Pebbles (Barney's got some mad beats, yo!) 12. Sparkle Crest 13. McDonald's 14. Candilicious (Woah, alternate version!) 15. Rascals 16. "Smurfs' Adventures" Commercial Bumper 17. Promo for "Webster" (I never really watched this. Emmanuel Lewis seems like a pretty cool dude though) 18. Promo for "Alvin & The Chipmunks" 19. Kids Club Hour/Help Harvey Huff And Puff (I like how the kids are given literally only seconds to speak)
Video Rating: 5 / 5

  1. One of my friends had a Burple. I don't think those things were around very long.

  2. Oh man, those fruity pebbles commercials ran in that format up through the early 2000s. Talk about consistency.

And I had sparkle crest as a kid in the early 90s. Shit was nasty.

  3. The Burple bottles look more fun than the drink.

I'm hoping those kids in the Roger Rabbit commercial didn't get half of the jokes in the film. Awesome movie, but it's not really a (young) kids flick.

Between Barney and Webster's cousin, it's clear that the late 80s were a golden age for white boy rap.

I have to admit, it's pretty bold to have someone hold your product, which is clearly a rip-off of another product, and have said someone ask "Have you ever seen anything like them on earth?".

  4. Some rapper you don't recognize barges into your house while you're eating breakfast, so what do you do? Get up and dance.

  5. I too remember watching "Alvin and the Chipmunks" in syndication as well. In my area, it was on KTTV 11.

BTW, didn't the series make its' off-network syndication debut on September 12, 1988 in all areas across America, or just some?

  7. Sad news. The white dog at 2:55 is now dead.

  8. Burple wasn't on the East Coast I beleive. I do know that my brother used to sing "now your cookin, eat some poo!"

  9. Ha ha, I remember Burple. I even remember when Little Caesars was pushing it with their pizzas. It was essentially glorified Kool-Aid.

  10. In all my 80s knowledge, I never heard of Burple, and I myself ask, "What the...?"

But I remember nearly everything else! Those cooking tools, the toothbrush, Candilicious, the TALKING Roger Rabbit, wow!

    Is Ertl still around?

It sounds like at the end he says "Coming up next, DUCT TAPE" (the handyman's secret weapon)

  13. "Burple" is an amazingly bizarre name for a product. Maybe it was regional? i've never heard of it.
I remember the Ertl cars. Can you even get steel toys anymore?
the CGI in the Sparkle Crest ad are pretty awesome for the time, and even now
so "Rascals" were basically Skittles, but...not Skittles?
"Cowboy Bob" looks like a real winner. A slightly femmy winner...

  19. I always loved the Sparkle Crest commercials. Actually, I liked any early CG. I was addicted to MTV's Liquid Television in the early 90's!

Ahh, man...Hills Dept. Store! That's some pure Midwest nostalgia right there. They used to have a popcorn/hotdog cart right at the front door. The smell would hit you the second the automatic doors opened. Awesome toy department too. "Hills is where the toys are!"

  21. I remember starting to watching Alvin and the Chipmunks in syndication back in '88. First episode I remember catching was "The Chipmunk Story" that showed them as babies. Still have recordings of "A Chipmunk Christmas" and "The Chipmunk Adventure" from around that time too.

  25. i remember when the environmentalists tried to ban the plastic toothpaste tubes that stood up on their own.
the thing about the smurfs that always blew my mind, why is this man who lives alone with a cat always trying to eat little blue men who lived in mushrooms?
